Menstruation is the most basic physiology in female bodies and plays a pivotal role in reproduction as well as maintaining the hormonal milieu of a female body. For decades together, menstrual cycle and problems related to it have been looked upon and ignored by the Indian cultural setting. However, over the last one decade, our population has come to terms that paying adequate attention to the menstrual hygiene and recognizing and addressing health issues around menstruation is of utmost importance.
Education about the menstrual cycle and management of issues revolving around it has become the need of the hour. Adolescent girls and young adults are coming forward openly seeking proper advice with healthcare providers as and when required. This gives us a golden opportunity to educate them about use of menstrual cups and biodegradable sanitary napkins.
Menstrual cups are made of inert silicon material and can be self-inserted into the vagina with utmost ease giving the advantage of one time investment, prevention of rashes and discomfort, user friendliness even in rainy season and not to forget a complete avoidance of waste disposal into our environment.
Similarly the use of biodegradable sanitary napkins cannot be emphasized enough over the traditional cloth napkins and non-biodegradable pads adding to the landfills and taking more than 5000 years to decompose completely. Its high time our youngsters take the reigns of preserving our beautiful home into their own hands.
