Abnormal uterine bleeding or AUB is one of the most notorious menstrual issues affecting the overall quality of a woman’s life and needs to be tackled in a way so as to cause her minimal physical and mental disharmony.

This bleeding disorder can be caused by an array of underlying conditions ranging from uterine fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis and malignancy, to non-organic causes like coagulopathy, hormonal imbalance like polycystic ovarian disease and perimenopausal transition, and drug induced dysfunction. AUB is particularly problematic for women undergoing their menopausal period.

For until two decades back, there were only two modalities of treatment including hormonal pills and hysterectomy. However, the discovery of the progesterone laden intrauterine device namely Mirena has revolutionized the treatment of AUB specially in adenomyosis and perimenopausal transition. This device can be inserted into the uterine cavity in a routine daycare procedure and lasts for 5 years.

It works by reducing the thickness of uterine cavity and significantly decreases bleeding episodes leading to hemoglobin conservation and a smooth transition into menopause. The advent and use of Mirena in our set up has reduced the hysterectomy cases by almost 80%.
